EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy

EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, stands as a beacon in the realm of integrative psychotherapeutic approaches, offering a profound avenue for processing stuck information. When a traumatic event occurs, it can become locked in the brain, embedding itself in the form of vivid pictures, sounds, thoughts, and feelings. This unprocessed information often lingers, triggering negative emotions such as helplessness, hopelessness, fear, and shame.

EMDR, the eye movement approach works as a key to unlock the nervous system, allowing the brain to process the traumatic experience through bilateral eye motion. This process mirrors the rapid eye movement (REM) dreaming state experienced during sleep, where unconscious material surfaces for processing.

The magic of EMDR lies in its ability to free disturbing events that have become isolated in memory networks within the brain. These isolated memories hinder our ability to learn and grow from our experiences. As we engage in EMDR therapy, a separate memory network in another part of the brain is accessed, leading us to another layer of old negative memories. Through this journey, the two associations can intertwine and find resolution.

The power of EMDR lies in its capacity to shift traumatic memories from the short-term memory banks, where they feel like terrifying flashes in the present, to the long-term memory banks, where we can acknowledge the past and overcome it.

In my practice, I often combine EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy) with EMDR for a holistic and comprehensive approach to profound healing, where the echoes of past traumas can be reshaped, empowering you to step into a future unburdened by the weight of unresolved memories.
